Yarn Bombs Away!
Have you ever spied a bronze statue sporting a fuzzy wool sweater? A park bench adorned with yarn and felt flowers? Or a tree sporting some 80′s retro-chic branch warmers?
Then you may have inadvertently witnessed the burgeoning guerrilla craft movement: YARN BOMBING. Fans of needlecraft from far and wide have been dressing up public attractions and natural wonders with homemade creations, adding color and quirk to our public landscape. These drive-by ninjas of knitwear use their craft to call our attention to overlooked wonders and add moments of unexpected joy to our daily routines.
I encourage you to try your hand at yarn bombing! It’s a fun way to contribute to the color of your neighborhood without causing permanent change to beloved (and often expensive) structures. You can do it for pure aesthetics, or make a political statement. Why not adorn the statue of a misogynistic historical figure with women’s clothing? How about wrapping a telephone pole in red yarn to show your solidarity on World Aids Day? Or why not wrap Rick Santorum’s campaign bus in rainbow yarn….?? It’s a fun way to contribute to the color of your neighborhood and make a statement without causing permanent change to beloved structures.
Lil' Bub visits the Field Museum
My favorite internet cat celebrity documents her visit to the Field Museum! Clearly, this is the most important thing to happen all week. Watch and love:
Currently Reading: Jim Henson, the Biography
“Who said that every wish, would be heard and answered, when wished on the morning star? Somebody thought of that and someone believed it, look what its done so far.”
10 seconds after learning about this book's existence, I bought a copy.
I'm only 15/600 pages done, but I'm already gushing about this most recent homage to a gentle genius determined to leave behind a legacy of kindness, self-acceptance and whimsy. If those aren't ideas worth leaving behind then I don't know what are!
Jim Henson and the whole Muppet gang have been a source of inspiration to me for a long time, hence my 2011 treatise on the intersections of Kermit and global health.
I cannot wait to delve a little into their history. To a merry couple of weeks!
